6DCT450 / MPS6 Clutch repair

The Getrag 6DCT450 PowerShift automatic transmission is used in 6-speed Ford and Volvo front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles. It features a wet dual-clutch system and a transverse powertrain layout.

A common issue with this transmission is the failure of the plastic components in the clutch damper. When this happens, the damper springs and cover begin to wear, releasing metal debris into the transmission and valve body. Often, when the transmission fails, fault code P2714 (Pressure Control Solenoid 'D' Performance/Stuck Off) appears. Some gears may become unavailable, or the vehicle may not move at all.

For DIY mechanics, we offer a complete clutch repair kit as well as pre-refurbished valve bodies.

Things to Note During Transmission Repair

  • If the clutch has incorrect clearance, clutch and steel plates must be replaced. When replacing clutch friction plates, pay attention to the oil groove direction: check the rotation direction of the frictions from the adjacent exploded diagram (1).
  • Also inspect the condition of the damper cover to ensure it is not excessively worn. If it is, we stock complete dampers for diesel models. The updated damper replaces the plastic parts with two long springs.
  • When refurbishing the transmission, we always recommend replacing the speed sensor, front cover, internal oil filter and of course transmission fluids.

NOTE! Refurbishing the clutch in petrol-powered vehicles is somewhat more difficult, as the damper must be cut open and welded back together.
