BMW ZF 6HP oil change
You can easily perform an oil change for BMW 6HP series automatic transmission by yourself. What you'll need:
- Oil change kit 6HP19/21 or 6HP26/28/32
- Required amount of oil pan screws
- To fill the oil, use a compressed air oil can or a manual oil change pump
- Transmission Cooler and Line Flush Kooler Kleen
- Container for old gear oil
- Protection gloves
- Basic hand tools (socket set, ratchet, hex 8mm + 10mm and torx 27/40)
Step-by-step
- Remove the bottom shield from under the gearbox.
- Open the drain screw (10mm hex) from the gearbox oil pan and drain the oil into the waste oil container. Note! If the car has just been driven, the transmission oil can be very hot.
- Open the oil pan screws. Older models use screws with torx 27 and newer models with torx 40. The gearbox oil filter is integrated in the oil pan.
- Clean the sealing surfaces of sand and other dirt.
- Put the new oil pan / filter in place. We recommend changing the oil pan screws with every installation. Tighten from the center to the edges (10mm hex).
- Open the filling screw (8mm hexagon). In most models, the screw is located on the right side of the gearbox. Oil temperature during the filling phase 30-35°C.
- Add gear oil until it flows out of the filler hole.
- Start the car, keep the gear in P and the car at idle.
- Again, add gear oil until it flows out of the filler hole.
- Close the filling screw. Go through the gears once (P-R-N-D).
- Check the diagnostics with a tester or an infrared thermometer for the temperature of the gear oil. During the check phase, the oil must be 40°C. Once the transmission has reached the correct temperature, open the check/fill screw. The oil should start to drain slowly from the hole. If the oil does not drain, add oil until it starts to drain.
- Close the screw and clean the oil pan and gearbox from spilled oil.
- Attach the bottom shield.
- Safe driving!
